Summary of General Guidelines for Students Receiving Disability Accommodations

  • Students must provide appropriate documentation of a disability to Online Student Affairs.
  • Based on the documentation, accommodations for classes are determined by the Assistant Director of Online Student Affairs, the Disabilities Accommodation Committee, and the student.
  • The student will receive a letter from Online Student Affairs in .pdf format, with the date the accommodations are in effect.
  • The student is advised to distribute accommodation letters to each instructor in a timely manner and discuss anticipated accommodations for the class. The letter should be presented even if the student has had the instructor previously. Accommodations are not retroactive.
  • If an instructor is concerned that a student may have a disability but has not presented an accommodation letter, the instructor should refer the student to Online Student Affairs.
  • Students who require additional time for testing are generally allotted 1 ½ times longer to complete testing; anything else will be noted in the letter.
  • For assignment extensions, the general rule is 1 ½ times longer can be awarded. In the case of online classes, this may amount to an additional day or so. These are guidelines, which may need to be altered for the specific student. Contact Online Student Affairs to discuss any concerns.
  • Participation in class is an inherent part of the structure and is not part of the assignment extension.
